Erik Jansson, M.D.
Dr. Jansson has been a member of the Humboldt County Medical Community for 30 years. Initially he had a solo practice in ophthalmology in Arcata from 1981 until 1998, then he joined Dr. Stewart, Dr. Gibb and Dr. Mastroni to create North Coast Ophthalmology. He now sees patients at both Arcata and Eureka locations. As a general ophthalmologist, he enjoys the variety of working with patients of all ages including those with cataracts, glaucoma, eye-related emergencies and even routine checkups for glasses. With experience in ophthalmology spanning 35 years, Dr. Jansson has seen dramatic changes in his specialty. “Technology has exploded in many areas of ophthalmology”, Dr. Jansson says, “the idea of refractive surgery was only a dream 30 years ago and now it is a common practice.” He adds, “the planning of cataract surgery often includes the same goal as LASIK, to minimize the need for glasses. This is only one example. Our ability to test the function of the eye, and image retinal structural details with a “photograph” is astounding. There have also been major advances in drug development for infections and glaucoma, bringing much improved results in those areas. It has been a joy to be part of the process that has been of great benefit to so many people with eye or vision problems”. In January 2010, Dr. Jansson and his partners opened a new ambulatory surgical center, Humboldt Physicians Surgery and Laser Center. This fully equipped facility allows us to deliver state of the art eye surgery and laser treatments to the community at a much lower cost.
Dr. Jansson was re-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology in 2009, and is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Humboldt County Medical Society and the California Medical Association. He is on the active medical staff of St. Joseph and Mad River Community Hospitals. Ophthalmology residency training and internship were at UCSF, Fresno Campus, finishing in 1978. Other practice experience includes emergency medicine from 1973 to 1982 in Eureka, Chico, San Diego and the central valley of California. He received his M.D. degree in 1972 and B.S. degree in general science in 1969 from the University of Iowa. Other positions, affiliations and activities include; owner, developer and medical director of HealthSPORT. He was also Chief of the medical staff and Chairman of the Department of Surgery of Mad River Community Hospital and was a member of the organizing committee of the Humboldt Diabetes Project.
